In 2005 the time finally seemed right to begin building my dream of breeding and exhibiting pedigree cats. After an exhaustive search I chose The Sacred Cat of Burma (Birmans) as the breed that was closest to my ideal balance of exceptional beauty, affectionate family oriented temperment, and minimal genetic health issues.
I began working with some wonderfully supportive and patient Birman breeders and the time came for me to select a cattery name of my own. The name Gryphonwood was born of a combination of terms that held significance for me. I had spent several happy years as a Gryphon during my undergrad at the University of Guelph and loved the area so well, that I decided to make it my permanent home. We live in a mature, wooded area of the city near the UofG. Guelph, Ontario is located about 1 hour west of Toronto.
Gryphonwood officially became home to a small group of Birman cats and their human companions in 2006.
We are a small, CCA & CFA registered cattery that strives to produce Birman cats of excellent health, temperment and type. We cherish, and endeavour to build upon the quality work of those visionary breeders that have gone before us, and consider ourselves stewards in the preservation of these special cats. We are proud of our Birmans as excellent examples of the breed, raised lovingly underfoot in our family's home to be strong in mind, body and spirit.
